A word from the publisher

“Dialogue with Mediterranean gardens” is a book about Mediterranean gardens created by the landscape architect Brigitte Dematteis, who works in the south of France. A painter in her spare time, she invites us to wander through the pages of this book and illustrates the philosophy of her work through a wide variety of projects.

The eye must be taught to see. Make no mistake: creativity has its rules too! It is by no means disorder and chaos simply because its measurements are less precise than those of a compass. Structure is always just as present, but handled in another way: harmony in simplicity.

Words from Brigitte Dematteis

“I shall try to share with you my reflections on Mediterranean gardens. Delicate moments and serene places, shaded terraces, the vivid colours of a radiant spring: so many details through which to discover the simplicity that speaks to the charm of these magical places.”

In this life close to the sunlit world and rustic rhythms, it is the accent of my beautiful region that I bring to my gardens; and through my profession as a landscaper, I should like to convey a little of that Beauty.

This book is an artistic and philosophical journey. Page after page, scattered annotations will connect you with my way of conceiving the dialogue with Life, the dialogue with Nature, the dialogue of the self with itself… (…) that I should like to share with you for the space of a “Dialogue avec des jardins méditerranéens”.
